Two things are clear from the results of yesterday’s Election: Big Business has finally woken up and the imminent demise of the radical Tea Party has begun.
The Tea Party has been able to enjoy its rise to power within the Republican party solely because the establishment wing of the party needed them. They wanted to try to stem the rising tide of Progressive liberal changes that the majority of the American people overwhelmingly support, such as.
- 55% of Americans now support the legalization of Same-Sex marriage
- 58% of Americans support the legalization of marijuana
- 72% of Americans support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants
- A majority of Americans support healthcare reform and want to keep, modify or expand Obamacare
- Even 66% of Republicans support ENDA
The Republican establishment is not progressive, but they are most certainly pragmatic when it comes to their bottom lines. These polls make it clear that continued support of this extreme group of right-wing anti-government extremists is just not good for small or Big Business.
They intend to stop the Tea Party faction, led by their pied piper, the Canadian Senator Ted Cruz to lead this country into another disastrous government shutdown. Certainly not if they ever intend to regain control of the White House, Senate or the House. (They clearly aren’t in control of the House at this point either.)
They began their efforts to regain their party in earnest last night.
Terry McAuliffe’s gubernatorial win in Virginia was historic. It was the first time in 36 years that Virginian’s elected a Governor from the same party as the sitting President. It doesn’t matter that the margin of victory was only 2.5%, as some may argue. What matters is that the establishment GOP chose to lose the Virginia Governors mansion over spending money on Cucinnelli’s campaign(or his failed effort to re-instate sodomy laws in the Old Dominion.)
Chris Christie’s win was equally historic. He won re-election in New Jersey, a solidly blue state, with a 21% margin, 60-39%. This was the first time a GOP candidate won election in New Jersey with more than 50% of the vote, since George H.W. Bush captured 56% in 1988. Why was he able to win? By compromising and striking deals with the Democrats.
This doesn’t mean that Chris Christie should get too excited about the presidency just yet. Exit polls showed that Hillary Clinton would beat him 48% to 44% in the Garden State.
As exciting as those races may have been, the head to head primary Big Business vs Tea Party runoff in Alabama’s 1st congressional district was the most decisive victory of the night. Big Business scored a decisive victory with Bradley Byrne over Tea Party radical Dean Young, who compared himself to Ted Cruz (but was apparently too radical for even the Canadian Senator to support) and once said that “Gays should go back to California“.
Dean young now has the free time to begin his search for President Obama’s birth certificate in earnest again. Here you go Dean: President Obama’s long-form birth certificate.
One Big Business sure to benefit in 2014 and 2016? Big Popcorn.
Progressive America will be eating a lot of it as we enjoy watching the Grand Old Party continue to destroy itself.
What do you think? Were you as excited about last night’s results as I was? Leave me a comment and let me know!
