Pope Francis Named Time Person Of The Year

Today, Time Magazine officially revealed that it had chosen Pope Francis as the winner of it’s annual “Person of the Year” award for 2013.

I view Time Magazine’s annual “Person of The Year” as little more than a publicity stunt designed to sell magazines. But, this year was a bit different for me. I happened to have two horses in the race.

Edie Windsor

Edie Windsor Thea Spyer

Edie Windsor is heroic lesbian who challenged the injustice of the U.S. Federal Government’s “Defense Of Marriage Act” all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court – and won. As a gay man who had to drive all the way to New York State to legally marry my husband, she was my heart’s first choice.

Pope Francis

Pope Francis is the new head of the global Catholic Church. As I noted in an earlier post, I have a tremendous amount of respect for both his humility and his dedication bringing about much-needed change. As the spiritual leader and policy maker for 1.2 billion, I believe he was the right choice for this year’s award.
